Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is CDR and why it is required?

A competency demonstration report (CDR) is a skills assessment report that is required by designated assessment authorities for admission of migrants into Engineers Australia. This report is often developed for engineering students who wish to settle in Australia but their countries lack accreditation from EA. The report must contain documentary evidence of important engineering knowledge and skills from students who wish to have it. CDR is a requirement for students who wish to have their skills and competencies matched with those of Australian standards. Having the report at hand will enable students showcase their candidature as the right students for engineering studies in Australia.

2. Is evidence for the English Language Test required while applying for CDR skills assessment with Engineers Australia?

Yes. English competency is a key requirement for skilled migration arrangements. In addition, all engineering lessons in Australia will be offered in English. By proving one’s ability in English Language Proficiency with a pass in the English Language Test, the complexity of getting migrant access to Australia is eliminated. There are several English tests which are conducted such as IELTS, TOEFL iBT and PTE. For admission, a candidate should pass all the assigned English tests in order to get proficiency in listening, reading, writing, and speaking the language.

3. What is KA02 and who need it?

KA02 stands for Knowledge Assessment 2 Report. The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) requires that this technical report must be submitted by both Information, Communication & Technology and engineering students who wish to migrate to New Zealand but their qualifications lack accreditation by the Washington Accord. This report is a mandatory tool for engineering students as it fully prepares them for their engineering studies and residency in New Zealand.

4. Which English Language Tests are acceptable by the Engineers Australia?

The two most common English Proficiency tests required from non-native English speakers are PTE and IELTS. Engineers Australia currently accepts IELTS, TOEFL iBT, and PTE as basic proof of English Language Proficiency.

5. What is Recognition Prior Learning and who need this report?

Recognition Prior Learning is a report that is developed after an assessment of an individual’s formal and informal learning experiences. The report outlines the credit factors an individual has in order to receive further qualifications from AQF. This report is important for students who wish to have their current learning outcomes recognized to match the needs of future leaning outcomes. By having this report, the time needed to acquire new experiences for further qualifications is reduced.

6. Does Engineers Australia accept the PTE and TOEFL PBT?

Engineers Australia accepts both PTE and TOEFL PBT English Proficiency tests. PTE is the Pearson Test of English Academic which is a basic requirement for students who wish to migrate and study abroad. TOEFL PBT is the Test of English as a Foreign Language which accurately measures one’s ability to listen, read, and write using English language in performing academic tasks.

7. Which material/ projects can be used for the preparation for CDR?

Competency Demonstration Reports consist of three critical parts. These are the three career episodes, a summary statement, and a continuous professional development (CPD) report. The Three Career Episodes outline the actual work and activities an engineer has undertaken. The Summary Statement is prepared based on reference points captured by the Three Career Episodes. A Continuous Professional Development (CPD) report is the final part of the CDR which outlines the courses, trainings, seminars, readings, and workshops among others that engineers have undertaken to enhance their engineering knowledge and skills.

8. Is it important to have some Work Experience relevant to the engineering field while applying for CDR?

Yes. By developing CDR, a demonstration of appropriate engineering knowledge and skills is required. This is because demonstrating relevant engineering competencies in the application for EA consideration increases the chances of acceptance. Some work experience is required in order to back up the Three Career Episodes report by outlining the projects and activities already done.

9. Is it necessary to provide the job experience letter?

Yes. Work reference letters provide additional assessment information apart from the CDR. This is because these reference or experience letters outlines the applicant’s years of relevant job experience in the engineering field. The job experience letter will indicate the nature of the job in terms of the number of organizations served, duration of the jobs, specific duties assigned, and other endorsements.
